Abstract

This study examined batterers' beliefs and behaviors from program onset to completion within a Florida certified batterer intervention program. This study included 158 participants who took part in a 24-week program in 1996 and 1997, wherein they each completed pre-assessments of verbal, emotional, and physical aggression. The same assessment tools were used at the completion of the program and were completed by 67% of participants. Archival follow-up data, acquired approximately nine years after the completion of the program, were obtained from public records and were used to compare recidivism among program completers with non-completers. Program completion was not associated with decreased levels of recidivism, which was defined as any violent crime. Batterers who completed the program, however, did report decreases in physical and verbal aggression, as originally hypothesized. The results did not reveal robust positive effects of this batterer intervention program, consistent with existing research that suggests the need for program and community improvements as a way of deterring future crimes of domestic aggression. Limitations of this research project and implications for future research in this area are discussed.
