Abstract
This thesis addresses four questions: (1) what is the status of the rape crisis movement (2) what are the implications of the status of the movement for rape prevention programs (3) are rape and sexual violence appropriate topics for anthropological research and (4) how does an individual balance an academic and an activist role? In order to answer these questions research was conducted with the local rape crisis center and at the University of West Florida Take Back the Night observances. Utilizing Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus as a theoretical framework, two waves of the rape crisis movement are identified and analyzed in terms of the repercussions for rape prevention education in the United States.
