Abstract

The B Street Schooner site has been a recurring archaeological resource studied to understand the ever-evolving Pensacola waterfront. After its reburial in 2012, the site was seemingly set to rest under five feet of infill, with no future investigations foreseen. However, after over a decade, erosion of the infill was detected and new concerns for site stability once again placed the B Street Schooner at the forefront of preservation management in Pensacola. This thesis offers submerged material culture management recommendations to the City of Pensacola through an analysis of current conditions of the site and an understanding of archaeological management best practices. Research of general preservation legislation at the federal, state, and municipal levels in the United States and Florida situates Pensacola into the overall archaeological preservation discourse. Furthermore, the surveys completed for this research and the numerous case studies discussed throughout this thesis offer insights and resources for long-term management of submerged cultural resources that other municipalities around the state or country can utilize.
