Abstract

Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland. Symptoms of GD often present as psychiatric in nature which often leads to misdiagnosis of a neuropsychiatric disorder rather than an appropriate diagnosis of GD. In 1996, Stern and colleagues distributed the first large scale survey to assess the neuropsychiatric complaints of patients with GD, finding irritability and anxiety to be the most common. The Stern et al. survey also assessed the length of time respondents took to seek medical treatment once symptoms appeared and the length of time to receive an accurate diagnosis of GD once patients began seeking treatment. The present investigation seeks to reassess findings of the Stern et al. survey, as well as to gather additional information regarding common misdiagnoses and commonly employed treatment methods. Results of the present investigation show symptom presentation remains the same as the previous study; respondents are taking longer to seek treatment, physicians are taking longer to arrive at an appropriate diagnosis of GD, almost half of respondents received a misdiagnosis prior to an accurate diagnosis of GD, and the most common treatment method found to be successful was antithyroid medication.
