Abstract
This thesis explores the experiences of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals in Pensacola, Florida. Using ethnographic mixed-methods research, this project reveals the ways in which SGM individuals experience, embody, and buffer against the impacts of structural violence. Relying on a theoretically robust framework, this research suggests that SGM individuals in Pensacola, Florida, are psychologically embodying their lived experiences of violence. These experiences are heavily influenced by the anti-SGM legislation in Florida. In response, the SGM community deliberately manifests and maintains safe spaces. These acts of resilience act to buffer the community against violence and in doing so, create space forvulnerability.
