Abstract
This study addressed the motivators and barriers that adolescents involved in the legal system face in seeking formal help for mental health and substance abuse problems. There is little research that addresses the help-seeking needs of these youth, their families, and communities. Suggestions from past research were utilized in the present study to target the needs of this unique population. Adolescents involved in the legal system, parents of these adolescents, and community service providers were assessed through semistructured interviews, field observations, and document reviews. The roles of the educational and legal systems, and their influences on help seeking among at-risk youth, were also investigated. Primary findings included participant-generated strategies to decrease barriers and increase motivators of formal help seeking for this population.
