Abstract
Although there has been a considerable amount of literature examining health locus of control in healthy samples and medically ill samples, there is a dearth of research examining health locus of control and its relationship to anxiety and depression among people being tested for medical conditions. The present study examined the relationship between health locus of control and anxiety and depression among 200 consecutively recruited adults being tested for HIV through an anonymous test site. Results indicated a significant positive relationship between powerful others health locus of control and depression, and a significant positive relationship between chance health locus of control and both depression and anxiety. Results also indicated a main effect for chance health locus of control on depression. Marginal main effects were found for powerful others health locus of control on depression and for number of sex partners on anxiety.
