Abstract

This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of a home-based breathing relaxation treatment in reducing elevated blood pressure in African Americans with hypertension. Participants used the breathing treatment for 20 minutes, 4 times each week for a period of 4 weeks. Differences were observed in mean weekly office systolic and diastolic blood pressure. No statistically significant differences were found for depression, anxiety or quality of life. However, analysis revealed significant differences in perceived stress with perceived stress being significantly lower after treatment and at followup. Although statistically significant differences were not determined for all measures, some clinical benefits were achieved. Clinically relevant benefits include decreased blood pressure, reduced perceptions of stress and increased awareness of high blood pressure condition. These findings suggest that the home-based breathing treatment may be useful in managing stress and increasing awareness of hypertension.
