Abstract
In 1862, northwest Florida was consumed by Confederate fire. The fires of retreating Confederate forces devastated the booming industries of Santa Rosa County, Florida, located along the Blackwater River where gunboats for support against blockades were under construction and near completion. One hundred and sixty years later the search for one Ollinger and Bruce Confederate gunboat began. A heavily burned shipwreck at Shipyard Point, location of the Ollinger and Bruce Shipyard, was located in 2023 and documented by the University of West Florida. Using nonintrusive field methods, the University of West Florida investigated and mapped the vessel to determine its identity and its role in the maritime cultural landscape of Santa Rosa County and the larger political landscape of the United States’ Civil War. This thesis presents the results of the 2023 fieldwork, archival research, and subsequent analysis of the Shipyard Point Wreck.
