Abstract
First discovered in 2016, the Emanuel Point III wreck of Tristán de Luna’s 1559settlement attempt allows for further understanding of Iberian ship construction, possibly above
the waterline. Looking through past excavation records and drawings, this thesis explores what
portion of the ship the wreck comes from and how it got there. Another question to be addressed
is the possibility that EPIII is in fact another portion of EPII that was washed closer to shore by
the 1559 hurricane. Comparing excavation results to historical codices, conclusions are drawn
that the portion of hull is in fact a separate ship from EPII and is possibly upper stern structure, a
portion of hull that is rarely found in excavation sites.
