Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the ergogenic potential of a caffeine mouth-rinse during testing of muscular strength. Twenty-four resistance-trained participants (14 males, and 10 females) mouth-rinsed CAF (4/mg/kg/bw) or placebo in a randomized, repeated measures design. They were habitual caffeine users and refrained from any strenuous activity 24h prior to testing. Initially, height, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate were obtained followed by the 1-RM bench press. Results from this study revealed that compared to the placebo, there was a significant effect (P = .04) of caffeine on acute muscular strength, as 1-RM bench press (between placebo (M = 157.58; SD = 66.53) and caffeine (M= 160.17; SD = 67.07) after 1-RM training sessions. Acute caffeine (4mg/kg/bw) intake in a mouth-rinse form does significantly enhance acute muscular strength in the 1-RM bench press.
