Abstract
This study takes an intersectional approach, using archaeological and ethnographic evidence to further understand the processes of heritage-making. Through a semi-systematic literature review and a real-time case study this thesis assesses the gaps in the archaeology of enslavement in North America and with this assessment attempts to fill the gaps through archaeological investigations and ethnographic research. The case study for this thesis includes underwater geophysical surveys at Prospect Bluff, in Apalachicola, Florida, along with interviews with the local community. This thesis finds that marronage is a subject matter that is severely understudied in North American archaeology, and the interpretation and prioritization of Maroon historical narratives is beneficial in creating an equitable heritage for African Americans.
