Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine (1) regeneration rates of juvenile Luidia clathrata, (2) optimal regeneration salinity, and (3) if low food consumption or low salinity is the cause of the reduced regeneration rate seen at low salinities. There was no difference in regeneration rate between two sizes of juveniles when size was accounted for. The optimal regeneration salinity for Luidia clathrata was 33 g kg-1. This salinity is approximately open ocean salinity, which is typically greater than that found in bays that are the usual habitat for the species. At low salinities food consumption did not have a profound effect on regeneration; however, salinity itself caused a dramatic decrease in the rate of regeneration.
