Abstract

This thesis combines plural methods and multiples modes to argue writing and its healing potential for Veterans. Following the inspiration of Jessica Restaino’s Surrender: Feminist Rhetoric and Ethics in Love and Illness, the creation of a reflective writing/creative writing workshop designed to introduce that healing heuristic to the Veteran community serves as a main site of research and study. The need for Veterans to have fluid, movable methods in order to provide maximum accessibility is discussed and the necessity of love in that process is outlined. Practices in Bessel Van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score and Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones and their application in the creation of the Veteran’s workshop are explained; my own reflective writing and varied Veteran voices from the workshop are then pieced together to show the similarities Veterans face despite their diversities. Examples of similar studies are highlighted and examined, further demonstrating the potential and need for such programs for Veterans.
