Abstract

In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain must adhere to three different codes of conduct: one of hospitality, one of chivalry, and one of religion. These codes overlap in some places, but they also conflict at many points in the text. This thesis explains how Gawain attempts to satisfy his social, chivalric, and religious obligations simultaneously and how he must sacrifice elements from one area in order to satisfy another.
