AN ANALYSIS OF PLANT REMAINS FROM THE EMANUEL POINT SHIPWRECKS

Abstract
Macrobotanical data from the Emanuel Point shipwrecks, two sixteenth-century Spanish colonial vessels, were used to test if either of these vessels served as a bulk storage area for plant food materials for the colonists. Relative frequency and ubiquity analyses of several economically important items did not confirm that either of the excavated vessels filled this role. Morphometric analyses of a large sample of preserved olive endocarps from the shipwrecks were compared to modern specimens to indicate the likely presence of more than one cultivar of olive on board the vessels, reaffirming the importance of this crop to sixteenth-century Spanish culture.
