Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to apply statistical methods to determine if the Coronavirusdisease 2019 (COVID-19) quarantine affected students’ learning in the state of Florida for grades
three through twelve. Learning difficulties occurred from the worldwide quarantine and
potentially affected the students’ performance on state testing. The literature review also brings to
light issues that arose from the COVID-19 quarantine such as difficulties with online learning,
learning with technology, learning in a home environment, blended learning, learning with health
difficulties, and grading affected by virtual learning.
The analysis was done comparing the state assessment scores, the Florida State Assessment(FSA), and End-of-Course assessment (EOC). Two subjects were chosen in this comparison:
Algebra 1 and English Language Arts (ELA). Two data sets were used for the analysis; one from
the entire state of Florida and another from a kindergarten to eighth-grade school in Florida. The
Florida public data set was used to analyze the entire state, whereas the single school data set was
employed to see if the conclusions were consistent with the entire state. A Multiple Linear
Weighted Regression Analysis (MLWR) was performed on the data sets to determine what factors
affected students’ grades before and after the quarantine for the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result
of unequal number of students used to calculate the average scores by county, a weighted
regression MLWR was used for analysis.
The results showed that students faced a regression in their learning and struggled to masterthe grade level standards because of the COVID-19 quarantine. Algebra 1 had the most
significant effects since it had the largest decline before and after the COVID-19 quarantine. The
analysis demonstrated that the overall mean scores are significantly different before and after the
COVID-19 quarantine for both Algebra 1 and ELA. The scores did decrease after the quarantine
as well. The COVID-19 quarantine had a positive effect on attempting to decrease the spread of
the COVID-19 virus; however, the COVID-19 quarantine had seemed to have a different effect on
education as a whole.
