Abstract

Avocados have experienced substantial growth since NAFTA ended the ban on Mexican avocados in 1994. Mexico's state of Michoacán passed USDA inspection criteria and was the only place allowed to export avocados to the US. One in four jobs in Michoacán are avocado related. Not surprisingly, cartels have inserted themselves into the avocado supply chain to take advantage of the booming business. The first group to extort avocados was Los Zetas.
