• Marine sponges are an important component of reef systems because they provide sustenance for a variety of fishes and shelter for other numerous species.
• As some of the oldest enduring organisms, sponges have likely persisted for millions of years because of their unique survival abilities.
• These organisms are also the most profuse source of marine products that are used for human health.
• Sponges are a key organism to observe regeneration because of their resilience and capability to reaggregate and grow when cut or split into small pieces.
• Sponges can regenerate from fragments of adult sponges and even from single cells of the original sponge. Sponges that reaggregate piece themselves together and form new colonies of sponge cells.
• Studying regeneration has important medical implications and could lead to discovering methods to improve human medicine.
The objective of this study is to determine the regeneration rates in Axinella polycapella and Xytopsene sigmatum.
