Abstract

Among the University of West Florida's greatest resources includes the vast forests of west campus. Just over 1000 acres, the forest and trails stretch from the western perimeter of the main campus, and extend beyond the Gulf Clean Energy Center off Pate Street. Students, faculty, community members, and visitors visit this abundantly biodiverse area for an array of purposes. From research to recreation, the west campus is a canvas for opportunity. Additionally, ongoing research is conducted in these areas and focuses on their ecology. Published in 2021, a campus ecosystem study was performed by Dr. Frank Gilliam to better understand the historical effects on the west campus forests. The study concluded evidence of long term fire exclusion in a fire dependent ecosystem, and altered soil fertility. Other research includes Dr. Philip Darby's work with gopher tortoises.
