Abstract

Opium is the proverbial thread traveling through smuggling lines, like sutures closing a wound, simultaneously binding the United States and Mexico and permanently scarring each side. The opium poppy is where America's fight against drugs began. US Policies attempting to eradicate opium created an environment ripe for domestic smuggling and encouraged opium smuggling from Mexico.
