Abstract

Since Thomas Jefferson's presidency, Americans were interested in acquiring East and West Florida. However, the Jefferson administration and the Madison administration were unsuccessful in taking over Spain's Florida territories. President James Monroe was the first American President who authorized a full-scale seizure of Florida from Spain. Monroe sought Florida due to Florida's numerous economic benefits. such as the Mississippi River. the Apalachicola River. access to the Gulf of Mexico. Due to Jackson's triumphant victory over the British in the Battle of New Orleans. Monroe appointed Jackson commander in chief of the southern U.S. forces. Jackson had a successful military strategy by appointing Edmund P. Gaines to command the Battle of Negro Fort and Jackson invading Florida in January 1818.
