(This is an unpublished essay composed primarily of materials excerpted from two previously published manuscripts.1 What appears here represents a relatively small portion of the originals, and has in some cases been re-written and re-organized. The reason for this new form is an attempt to reach a wider audience with Merleau-Ponty’s insightful philosophy of language, and yet to do so without losing the rigor and complexity of Merleau-Ponty’s thought.)
