Abstract

The limited research on attrition percentages in online EdD programs comprises the problem under investigation. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe the lived experience of students in an online EdD higher education administration program who completed all program requirements except for the dissertation at a Southeastern university in the United States. This study chose participants using purposive sampling based on the following inclusion: students enrolled in the online EdD in the higher education administration program who had completed all program requirements except for the dissertation. Students had to be enrolled in dissertation credits to participate in the study. The self-designed instrument protocol included 18 semistructured, open-ended questions, which served as the data source. The ARCS-V model of motivational design by John M. Keller provided the conceptual framework that guided this study. The five concepts of the ARCS-V model were fundamental in explaining students’ motivation for persisting in the online EdD program. The findings demonstrated that program structure, course content, coursework, relationships, faculty support, self-motivation, accountability, and self-care determined students’ motivation to persist throughout the doctoral journey; however, confidence sometimes wavered. Significant conclusions included promoting interest during the dissertation phase contributed to students’ high engagement and motivation during the learning experience. Future research should explore student integration and mentoring interventions during the 1st year to target imposter syndrome.
