Abstract
The Dissertation in Practice investigated the use of the Hillside Media Center and identified possible solutions for improving support and services for students and teachers. This study took place at Hillside School, which serves all fifth- and sixth-grade students in Windsor County. Stakeholders used Human Performance Technology (HPT) to implement positive changes. I collected data from surveys, focus groups, and interviews with the relevant stakeholders. A gap analysis identified the two most critical issues: (a) appropriate resources for students and teachers, and (b) media specialist availability. The root cause analysis phase used a Current Reality Tree (CRT) and an Ishikawa diagram combined with the 5-Whys method to identify root causes. Lack of communication between teachers and the media specialist and lack of student input for materials purchased was the second identified root cause. I recommended using a public relations campaign with a procedure manual or job aid. The public relations campaign used digital newsletters and a digital kiosk to get the faculty, staff, and students’ promotional information. Job aids were created in both print and digital formats to meet the specific needs of patrons to access. The full scope evaluation method provided feedback on the formative, summative, and confirmative assessments. Using the information learned throughout the dissertation, I reflected on the implications of the study.
