The i-Ready online mathematics instruction program serves as a tool for school systems to measure students’ academic performance. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the instructional strategies that 10 middle school educators in a Southeast Georgia school district used to motivate students using i-Ready and to understand their perceived impact on student motivation. Participants had a range of teaching experience in mathematics and use of i-Ready online instruction. One-on-one interviews, observations, and document search were sources of data for this study. Self-determination theory provided a framework to align with the objective of the study and answer the research questions. The findings revealed i-Ready effectively raised the students’ academic achievements in mathematics. The participants demonstrated the use of different strategies to motivate students using i-Ready in an online setting, including engaging students with different learning methods; helping students develop a positive attitude; conveying warmth, caring, and respect to students; and external rewards and supportive practices. The results indicated middle school mathematics teachers showed a positive intention to motivate students using autonomy, competence, and relatedness strategies by using i-Ready. Future research can include other populations of teachers from other school districts across the United States to get their perspectives on using i-Ready online instruction.
