Abstract
An estimated 40% of individuals entering postsecondary institutions are not prepared for college coursework, which increases the chances of becoming a college dropout. College dropouts have student debt, fewer job opportunities, and limited earnings. To address the problem of college preparedness, specific to the negative effects of inadequate preparation, secondary and postsecondary institutions have partnered to offer dual enrollment programs for high school students to prepare them for the transition to college. This qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis investigated how experiences in dual enrollment courses prepared recent graduates of a rural high school in Northwest Georgia for college. Tinto’s theory of integration formed the framework to understand how dual enrollment courses contribute to students’ academic and social integration in college. I used purposeful sampling to select eight participants and open-ended interview questions as the primary data source. An interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed that participation in dual enrollment courses helped prepare participants academically for college and contributed to improved time-management, organizational skills, communication, and exposure to rigorous coursework. The study concluded that the 2019 graduates who participated in dual enrollment courses during their high school years were both academically and socially prepared for college. While the findings suggest that dual enrollment participation contributed to social integration, this aspect remained a challenge for the first-year college students. The study raises questions for future research related to how specific delivery models of dual enrollment courses can contribute to college preparedness as well as the collaboration between secondary and postsecondary institutions concerning program options.
