Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a better understanding of the views and perceptions of students who were required to take developmental English courses. Additionally, this study examined the types of instructional practices that enhanced students' interaction and engagement in learning. My ultimate goal was to be able to assist teachers and administrators in making pedagogical and curriculum decisions that will maximize these students’ academic success. Observations, questionnaires, and interviews were the major methods of data collection. Findings of this study revealed that each student's interaction with the teacher is unique. Students shared a common perception of classroom interaction. Themes selected, focusing on the study’s major research questions, clearly illuminated overarching themes of confidence and competence. The findings indicated that the teacher used didactic instructional practices to increase student interaction and academic achievement. The recommendations include implementing more active modes of teaching in the classroom to increase students' engagement in learning and to enrich students' learning experiences.
