Abstract
March 2020 and the shutdown of schools in response to the spread of the COVID-19 virus showcased the tenacity of the parents assisting their children to connect with teachers and peers and to access the curriculum and materials through online means. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of parents of students with disabilities supporting their child in online learning because of the COVID-19 global pandemic changes to educational settings during the 2020–2021 academic school year. I chose a qualitative research design seeking to understand the formation of the individual participants’ realities in the constructs of the research question. The case study included three sets of interviews with each
participant using open-ended questions aimed at gaining insight into the role of self-efficacy and cultural and social capital parents used during this unique time in history. Analysis of each case revealed parents accessed a variety of self-knowledge to connect to the online classroom and modify materials to address their children’s academic needs. Additionally, parents found outside agencies, friends, neighbors, and family members to be beneficial in meeting the additional demands of providing school support to their children. A cross-case analysis revealed differences in the approaches parents took based on their background knowledge and access to resources. Additionally, the cross-analysis showed that all participants agreed that the online platform was not appropriate for a child with a disability considering the additional strain on both themselves as parents and their children.
