Abstract

An ex post facto study was conducted to determine whether a predictive relationship existed between exposure to stressful life events and emotional intelligence in a sample of 92 elementary-aged children from Northwest Florida. A regression analyses showed that a predictive relationship did exist, r2 = .47, p < .001, between below-average emotional development and above-average exposure to stressful life events. Participant response on self-report measures indicated that exposure to positive life events seemed to mediate the effect of exposure to negative life events. A case study, which explored the experiential insights of mental health therapists on their work in the public school system, determined that the mental health needs of children in the public school system were often more severe with less family support than the mental health needs of children seen in clinical practice.
