Integrating The Theories Of Neuman And Rotter In The Preparation Of Nurses

Abstract
This study utilized the work of Neuman (1989), Neuman and Fawcett (2011), and Rotter's (1954) social learning theory in exploration of the following constructs: system, client, and stressors in Neuman systems theory (Neuman, 1989) and behavior potential, expectancy, and reinforcement value in social learning theory (Rotter, 1966) relative to the preparation of nurses. The research consisted of two phases that utilized a convenience sample. Phase 1 consisted of a pilot study involving nursing educators for the conceptual verification of the TestWell(R) Wellness Inventory College Edition (National Wellness Institute [NWI], 1999) and the 2016 NCLEX(R) Test Plan (National Council of State Boards of Nursing [NCSBN], 2016c). Cronbach's alpha for the TestWell(R) (NWI, 1999) instrument was .878 and for the 2016 NCLEX-RN(R) Test Plan (NCSBN, 2016c) was .711. Phase 2 involved a nonexperimental ex post facto correlational research design to explore the following research question: What are the interrelationships among the constructs of Neuman systems model and Rotter's social learning theory relative to nursing students' perceived levels of preparedness and competency? The only correlation to reveal a significant relationship was between spirituality and students' perceived levels of competencies NCLEX(R) Test Plan (NCSBN, 2016c) components (r = .350, p = 0.050) at the .01 level. Locus of control (LOC; Rotter, 1966) was positively related to the NCLEX(R) Test Plan (NCSBN, 2016c) category Management of Care category (r = 1.00, p = < .001) at the .001 level with consideration that a medium effect size was not reached.
