Abstract

This qualitative research study examined the lived experiences of community college basic writing students. Attempting to systematize pedagogy, I constructed a continuum with institutional pedagogy on one end, followed by critical, feminist, transformative, and engaged pedagogies. This analytical tool enriched my understanding of a pedagogy of basic writing. Focusing on the experiences of both current and former basic writing students, I observed 2 classes over the course of a semester, conducted in-depth, one-on-one interviews with 12 of the students and their 2 instructors, and facilitated focus group interviews of former basic writing students. The narratives of these students suggest that a sound pedagogy of basic writing must embrace sensitivity, motivation, an ethic of care, a sense of community, and nontraditional teaching methods.
