Abstract

This researcher examined principals and the strategies they implemented to increase or maintain school grades and determined if the principals used a multiple-frame approach to leadership. Principals from 3 A schools and 3 F schools participated in the study. An interview was used to gather data on principals' actions to increase or maintain the school grade. The results indicate that principals of both A and F schools struggle with many of the same issues; however, the struggles are for different reasons and to different degrees. The results suggest that principals in both A and F schools use many of the same strategies to increase student achievement, but the difficulty of implementation is very different and unique. The Leadership Orientations (Self) Survey (Bolman & Deal, 1990) was used to assess the principals' use of the 4 leadership frames. The results indicated that 5 out of 6 principals used at least 2 of the leadership frames. The human resource frame was the most common frame used.
