Abstract

Over the past two decades, museums have evolved from repository institutions to educational institutions. This evolution involved the expansion of the scope and diversity of educational functions of museums to provide experiential education. Consequently, the educational functions of museums have become the driver of all other functions of a museum. However, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) is not using its collections and exhibitions to provide the public with experiential and social engagement learning opportunities because of a lack of funds, space, leadership, and coordination. This situation has led to low employee morale and a reduction of visitors’ interest in the GMMB. The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to examine the experiential education functions and activities of the GMMB as a public education actor. The research drew nine participants among the staff of the GMMB at the Accra and Cape Coast offices. The experiential learning theory provides an educational framework that facilitates memorable experiences for learners; hence, the theory was most appropriate for this study. The study’s findings revealed that the GMMB museums operate with a “do not touch” principle, a lack of interactivity, rare engagement with the community, and a lack of quality assurance in their educational functions and activities. The study can impact policy by providing resourceful information for policymakers and museum practitioners on the designing and implementing of the museum’s educational functions. Based on the findings, I am looking forward to researching the visitor experience at the GMMB.
