Abstract
The life-worlds and lived experiences of 4 African-American male youth, Cornell, Omar, Keith, and Gerald, were the focus of this research. Cornell and Keith were alternative school students, while Keith and Gerald were charter school graduates attending community college. Individual interviews captured their perspectives on their experiences in life and school and revealed individual and common circumstances between them. The standpoints of classroom instructors and counselors, who serve students like those central to this study, were also gathered from individual interviews. Their interviews exposed noteworthy lessons in pedagogy and relationship building for other educators. Finally, the study offered implications for educational policies in articulation and college/employer relations that might help educational systems better serve students with experiences like those in this research.
