Abstract
This dissertation focuses on the work of the Historic Pensacola Preservation Board, a state agency created in 1967 and charged with taking a leadership role in local historic preservation efforts. The Preservation Board concept was initiated with the creation of the St. Augustine Preservation Board in 1959 to support local historic preservation efforts in that city. Ultimately, seven Preservation Boards were created. During the 34 years the Historic Pensacola Preservation Board operated, the agency was an integral part of promoting preservation success in the community. All the Preservation Boards except Pensacola were repealed by 1997. The Historic Pensacola Preservation Board was eventually repealed by legislation in 2001, when the collections and buildings were transferred to the University of West Florida. This dissertation tells the story of Pensacola's preservation struggles, wins, and losses during the last half of the 20th century.
