Abstract
This descriptive qualitative research study examined the lived experiences of adult women who began their first semester in community college developmental courses. Incorporating feminist themes of communication and collaboration, the researcher documented difficulties adult women face during their first semester by interviewing both women in their first semester and women who had moved beyond their first semester. The findings from this research suggest that educators should incorporate an ethic of care into their teaching and that administrators should recognize the need to support adult women when they return to school, especially during their critical first semester. The research adds an often-overlooked student voice to educational research, providing an understanding of this perspective for students, instructors, and administrators.
