Abstract

The present research addresses the issue of a large number of children entering kindergarten in the United States at different cognitive, language, and social levels; creating an initial gap in cognition, language, and social functioning prior to beginning formal schooling. The Vygotsky model of preschool daycare education postulates that cognition, language, and social development are most effectively promoted through a constructivist approach to learning. The focus of the study was to explore the influence of a Vygotsky model preschool daycare setting on school readiness by examining differences in the observed features of two models of preschool daycare settings (Vygotsky versus non-Vygotsky). This study utilized an ex post facto research design to explore differences between the average kindergarten readiness levels (cognitive, language, and social) between children who have experienced a Vygotsky model preschool daycare setting and those children who have experienced a non-Vygotsky model preschool setting. The settings were determined Vygotsky or non-Vygotsky based on specific scores on the Daycare or Homecare Site Checklist, an observation checklist measure based on the conceptual framework of Vygotsky preschool education. A pilot was tested for use in the study. The Kindergarten Observation Form completed by students' respective kindergarten teachers determined kindergarten readiness levels of the children who participated in the study. Findings of the study indicate that there were no significant differences between the two groups.
