Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore differences in perceptions of mentoring activities from four generations of registered nurses in Florida, using the Alleman Mentoring Activities Questionnaire(r) (AMAQ(r)). Statistical procedures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to explore differences among 65 registered nurses in Florida from various generational groups who completed the questionnaire. Significant differences were observed in the mean scores of generational groups for the subscales Teach the Job and Demonstrate Trust. A significant difference was observed in the mean subscale scores of participants from different generational groups with prior mentoring experience for the overall AMAQ(r) and for the subscales Assign Challenging Tasks and Protect. Implications are suggested for nurse educators, nursing administrators, and nurses in clinical practice. Implications suggested for nurse educators include collaborating with nurses in practice and identifying opportunities for mentoring both nursing students and novice nurses. Nurse administrators are encouraged to support activities which facilitate interaction between the generations of nurses in practice and mentoring programs which can be evaluated to help improve job satisfaction, leading to higher retention rates. Nurses in practice are encouraged to recall their experiences as new graduates and to assist novice nurses by making the time to mentor the next generation of nurses.
