Abstract
This quantitative correlational study examined beginner teachers’ perceptions of the Georgia Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES), which is the teacher evaluation system that public school districts in Georgia use. I assessed teachers’ perceptions using the Teacher Evaluation Profile (TEP) questionnaire, which assesses perceptions on five subscales: Overall Quality, Personal Attributes, Evaluator Attributes, Feedback Attributes, and Evaluation Context. The purpose of the TKES is to promote student achievement and teacher effectiveness by providing educators with meaningful feedback on their instructional practices. Therefore, this study was grounded in the social cognitive theory, which addresses the reciprocal relationship of learning between the individual, the environment, and exhibited behavior(s). I acquired 93 participants from a convenience sample of beginner teachers from a large school district in Georgia. A descriptive statistical analysis revealed a neutral overall score for the TEP questionnaire among participants (M = 3.72), with the Feedback Attributes subscale at the low end of the data range (M = 3.34) and the Personal Attributes subscale at the highest end (M = 3.90). Data analysis revealed a significant relationship between teachers’ scores on the Personal Attributes subscale and their years of teaching experience (p = .039). Analysis also revealed a significant relationship between participants’ scores on the Overall Quality of the Evaluation subscale and their current teaching assignment (p = .018). No significant differences were found for the other subscales among the two independent variables. Recommendations for future study are to add a qualitative component to understand the nuances of beginner teachers’ perceptions better.
