Abstract

The impacts of individual and collective efficacy on increasing student achievement and effective teacher practices have been presented in numerous studies, yet many teachers lack the efficacy described by researchers. Teachers with low levels of efficacy are restricted in implementing practices to propel students’ academic success. Knowledge of the impacts of high efficacy and limitations of low efficacy warrant further exploration of the lived experiences that influence efficacy. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences that influence individual and collective efficacy among school leaders and teachers in select public elementary schools in Northwest Florida. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, which describes efficacy as belief in the ability to accomplish specific tasks and achieve greater outcomes through deliberate actions, outlines constructs including mastery and vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and emotional and physiological conditions. An in-depth exploration of participants’ lived experiences revealed that autonomy, clear expectations, impact on students’ outcomes, reflection and self-awareness, prior experiences, observations, collaboration, relationships, a growth mindset, and a positive attitude influence teachers’ and school leaders’ efficacy. The findings of this study support previous studies on the influence of experiences, knowledge, and school environment on efficacy among teachers and school leaders. Based on the findings of this study, future research could explore the connections between Bandura’s self-efficacy theory and Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory, study the lived experiences influencing students’ efficacy, or conduct a mixed methods study exploring the experiences of teachers and school leaders that influence efficacy and yield a more diverse sampling.
