Abstract
Florida public school teachers are evaluated annually per requirements outlined in Florida Statute. However, Florida teaching standards and evaluation models were developed for the traditional classroom, not the virtual classroom, which may impact virtual teachers evaluated with these systems. This quantitative correlational study aimed to determine if a relationship existed between teaching environments and teachers’ evaluation outcomes in selected school districts in Florida. Social cognitive theory was the framework for this study, with a focus on the construct of reciprocal determinism, which explains how the person, behavior, and environment influence human functioning (Bandura, 1978, 1986). Teacher evaluation data collected from selected Florida school districts were analyzed using a chi-square test of association and binomial logistic regression. Results indicated a weak positive association between teaching environment and teacher evaluation scores (φ = 0.20, p < .001). Additionally, traditional school teachers were more likely to earn highly effective on their evaluation compared to virtual teachers (OR = 0.2, p < .001), female teachers were more likely to earn highly effective than male teachers (OR = 0.55, p < .001), White teachers were more likely to earn highly effective than non-White teachers (OR = 0.58, p = .001), and more experienced teachers were more likely to earn highly effective than less experienced teachers (OR = 1.03, p = .004). Results suggest teaching environment, gender, race, and teaching experience were predictive of evaluation scores, indicating a need for further research on virtual teacher evaluation models and the effect of demographics on teacher assessment.
