Abstract
This program evaluation examines the perceptions of teachers regarding professional learning in trauma-informed practices (TIPs) at a Title I school serving over 1,100 seventh- and eighth-grade students in the southern United States during 2022-2023 school year. The district underwent consolidation in 2019 and faced increased stressors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These circumstances highlighted the necessity for TIPs to support students and staff effectively. To address this, qualitative data were gathered from teacher surveys, attendance and discipline reports, and school performance metrics. The evaluation framework combines Guskey’s Model of Teacher Change (MTC) and Knowles’s adult learning theory, emphasizing teachers’ reactions, learning outcomes, and organizational support required for TIP implementation. Twenty-one teachers participated, completing a SWOT analysis on current professional development practices and engaging in experiential learning through a Community Action Poverty Simulation and professional learning communities. Post-simulation focus group interviews and individual interviews were analyzed using MAXQDA to assess teachers' insights into TIP-based professional learning. Findings demonstrated favorable teacher responses toward experiential, collaborative learning and underscored the need for consistent leadership and support from school administration. These insights, shared in a stakeholder meeting, inform effective strategies for enhancing trauma-informed professional learning and teaching practices, aligning with organizational change objectives.
