Abstract

The rise of virtual learning as an emerging educational method presented challenges in understanding the quality of students’ online experiences, such as the reliance on external resources in virtual math courses raised concerns. Urgency to explore effective instructional strategies and student learning methods arose due to the increasing popularity of online education, especially after the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. This study delved into the common practice of using alternative instructional resources in a virtual setting, particularly in a higher-level mathematics course. The research question focused on why students opted for external resources over the organization’s course materials. A literature review highlighted the importance of understanding learners' needs in a virtual platform. Using the human performance technology model, the performance analysis revealed gaps between staff and students. Findings emphasized disparities in instructional strategies, resource management, student motivation, and learning methods. Stakeholder feedback informed interventions, leading to the development of video tutorials focusing on the calculus concepts in one module. The study followed the human performance technology model to guide the performance improvement process, incorporating the behavior engineering model and fishbone diagram to address potential causes of performance gaps. Video tutorials were designed as an alternative to embedded course lessons and external resources, focusing on students' learning methods. Evaluation involved formative and summative assessments, demonstrating improvements in students' performance on subscales. Utilizing Hiatt’s change management model, the project prioritized consistent communication with stakeholders, fostering their involvement and understanding in each research stage. The overarching goal was to comprehend instructional and learning practices supporting stakeholders at a virtual educational organization, aligning with the commitment to quality education.
