Abstract
Nuclear medicine technology programs must assess student competency and should adopt competency-based education (CBE). Effective assessment is a major tenet of CBE; however, no theory exists on competency assessment specific to nuclear medicine technology, and little research on the topic exists. The purpose of this grounded theory qualitative research was to explore the perceptions of nuclear medicine technology program directors and working nuclear medicine technologists to develop a theory of what constitutes an effective clinical competency assessment method in nuclear medicine technology education. I used CBE as a theoretical framework, specifically focusing on the tenet of effective assessment. I employed an iterative data collection protocol to gather data from the field using surveys and semistructured interviews. Findings revealed nuclear medicine technology educators struggled to incorporate CBE and effectively assess student competency. Problems with current methods included the variety of assessment methods used, inconsistencies with assessors, and the unknown efficacy of assessment methods. Expectations of competency performance and entry-level competency varied across the field. A need for some standardization in nuclear medicine technology education was evident, as was a need for educator and clinical instructor resources. A theory emerged from the data to include the critical components of effective competency assessment in nuclear medicine technology. This study and the emergent theory can inform nuclear medicine technology educators and stakeholders how to assess competency effectively and support the adoption of CBE. Future research should quantitatively examine assessment tools for validity and reliability and examine specific assessment methods to develop best practices.
