Abstract

Grandmothers raising grandchildren throughout the United States have increased dramatically over the years. Although research on grandmothers raising grandchildren addresses many different issues relating to lifestyles, parenting, and relationships, there is little research that focuses on the coping strategies used by grandmothers who provide care for their grandchildren. This qualitative study examines the lived experiences of three African-American grandmothers living in rural communities located in Southern Alabama while serving as primary caregiver of their grandchildren. Specifically, it examines the daily coping strategies that these grandmothers implement in order to be effective in their parental role.
