Abstract

Despite extensive research on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a significant knowledge gap remains between medical professionals and teachers regarding the disorder and its treatment. Through this qualitative exploratory case study, I examined the perspectives of five high school teachers in an urban Florida school district on implementing accommodations for students with ADHD. Watson’s (1930) and Skinner’s (1968) behaviorism theories, particularly the core principles of counterconditioning, reinforcement management, social support, and self-regulation, provided the theoretical framework for this study. Using a qualitative research methodology, I collected data through personal interviews and a focus group discussion with five high school teachers from various content areas. The findings revealed four key themes: class size and limited time are significant challenges for participants in meeting the needs of students with ADHD; participants often rely on short-term, easily implemented approaches; participants’ time limitations and a lack of patience hinder their abilities to build these relationships effectively; and participants’ understandings of diagnoses and multimodal treatment approaches are insufficient. A key implication of this study is the need to improve teacher attitudes by increasing knowledge of ADHD and enhancing training on behavioral modification strategies to strengthen teachers’ self-efficacy in classroom management. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral therapies and interventions. Additionally, future studies should explore how improved teacher training can enhance the monitoring of behavioral and academic progress in students with ADHD.
