Abstract

The problem this study sought to address was the university's reluctance to maximize the use of students' mobile devices. The purpose of this quantitative one-shot case study design was to examine the influence of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) on military students’ behavioral intention to use mobile devices while attending a professional military education course at a military university in Alabama. The UTAUT served as the theoretical framework to examine the factors influencing students' mobile device use. A modified UTAUT instrument was used to collect data from 149 participants. A simple linear regression model found significant relationships between the constructs of the UTAUT. Specifically, a significant relationship emerged between performance expectancy and behavioral intention with R2 = .317, F(1, 98) = .679, p < .01, f2 = .563; effort expectancy and behavioral intention R2 = .044, F(1, 98) = 2.889, p < .01, f2 = .209; and facilitating conditions and behavioral intention with R2 = .019, F(1, 98) = 1.248, p < .01, f2 = .137. The results indicated no significant linear relationship between social influence and behavioral intention with R2 = .094, F(1, 98) = 6.125, p < .01, f2 = .307. This study contributes to the development of institutional policies on emerging technologies and supports the development of mobile learning practices to improve support for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Future research should focus on faculty acceptance of mobile devices, specifically those aimed at faculty’s use of technology in the classroom.
