The use of correlation dimension in detection of synchronization in mechanical system models

Abstract
This study addresses the use of synchronization in order to assist fault detection by using nonlinear measures. The main purpose is to prove that synchronization could be used as a tool in condition monitoring techniques. Unexpected system or
component failures are detrimental to any business, and may mean interruption in the whole line of work, causing financial losses many times the component's worth. Therefore, predicting the failures and preventing them and/or taking precautions
even before they took place is the sensible strategy. Preventive diagnosis is a method in which some characteristic parameters of an operating system are monitored and analyzed on-line and possible failures can be perceived before they occur, hopefully, revealing adequate tell-tale signs for an early warning. With this perspective in a mechanical system, the proposed statement is as follows. Jf the system works perfectly, synchronized components give approximately the same values of correlation dimension (CD) which is a nonlinear invariant designating the system properties. On the contrary, if the system is not synchronized, correlation dimension values diverge from each other and this could indicate an occurrence of wear, or
backlash in the links among the components, or any crack propagation existing in a rigid body. Suggested method is applied to theoretical complex coupled time series, as well as simple mechanical system models. These models are mass spring and
bilinear cracked beam. From the results, the synchronization helps point out incipient faults or inherent anomalies with a certain amount of success.
