Abstract

FIDO2 Passwordless Authentication WebAuthn YubiKey public-key cryptography Control Applications (Computer Sciences) Cybersecurity
The well-known vulnerabilities of passwords are driving the adoption of passwordless solutions like FIDO2. This study examines the usability, security, and adoption challenges of FIDO2 on different platforms (Android, iOS) and browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). FIDO2 leverages public-key cryptography to provide a secure alternative to passwords through methods such as hardware security keys (e.g. YubiKey) and biometrics (fingerprint, facial recognition). Our research indicates that YubiKey has demonstrated high success rates across platforms, but biometric authentication faces some limitations and Google products (including Android and Chrome) have posed challenges to the promotion of FIDO2 to some extent. Despite its potential, widespread adoption of FIDO2 is hindered by challenges in user education, platform compatibility, and cross-platform standardization, highlighting the need for improved user guidance, simplified experiences, and consistent browser support.
